Whale watching in Tenerife — from Los Gigantes marina

The Tenerife–La Gomera channel hosts a resident colony of ~250 short-finned pilot whales plus bottlenose dolphins — sightings on a normal trip are near-certain. Boats leave Los Gigantes marina, 20 minutes' walk from the studio. It's Europe's first Whale Heritage Site.

Why it's world-class here

The channel drops to 2 000 m close to shore — deep-water squid hunters live permanently where boats reach in 20 minutes. Beyond the residents, season brings Bryde's whales, sperm whales, even blue whales on migration. The area holds Whale Heritage Site certification for responsible operation.

Choosing a boat

Small RIBs get close and quick; catamarans add comfort, food and swim stops. Look for the yellow 'Barco Azul' responsible-whale-watching flag. Morning trips = calmer water, better light, more active pods.

FAQ

Are sightings guaranteed?

No ethical operator guarantees wildlife — but resident pods make this the most reliable whale watching in Europe; many boats offer a free retry if nothing shows (verify policy).

Is it suitable for children?

Excellent — short trips exist, and pilot whales at 20 m beat any aquarium.
