Loop details
(1) Up to Santiago del Teide, over Cherfe pass, down Masca's hairpins, on to Buenavista, coffee at the golf-coast, return via Los Silos' cloud-forest road. (2) Chío ascent through lava to the caldera, Roques de García, exit via Vilaflor's pines. (3) North shore: Icod's dragon tree, Garachico pools and plaza, on to La Orotava's mansions, return over the island's shoulder at dusk.
Driving culture
Roads are excellent but curvy; locals are patient — use pull-offs to let them pass and to actually see the views. Every route in this guide assumes you stop often; the drives ARE the destination.
- Mountain fuel and toilets are scarce — handle both in towns.
- Hire-car excess on mountain gravel: park in real spaces, not verges.
- Sunday = local cyclist armadas on Teide roads; give 1.5 m and patience.
FAQ
Automatic or manual hire car?
Automatic makes the hairpins relaxing — worth the small premium here.
Can I circle the whole island in a day?
Physically yes (≈4.5 h driving), practically it wastes the island. Do loops.
